Jetzt möchte ich endlich mal erklären, wie die selbstbewässernden Container in Tims Nomadic Orchard funktionieren.
Eigentlich ist es ganz einfach: im unteren Teil jedes der Container (bei den linken: der graue Teil, beim rechten: der beige Teil) befindet sich Wasser, darüber die Erde, die bepflanzt wird.
Aber wie genau es in den Containern aussieht, erfahrt ihr im folgenden Artikel.
Umgedrehte halbierte Fässer und Kanister schaffen im unteren Drittel jedes Containers Hohlräume, die weitgehend frei von Erde bleiben. Die Fässer und Kanister haben im Boden (der jetzt oben liegt) Löcher, so kann bei Regen Wasser aus der Erde in die Hohlräume tropfen und damit den Wassertank wieder auffüllen.
Die Zwischenräume zwischen den Wasserzellen werden mit Erde aufgefüllt.
Über Kapillarkräfte und von den Wurzeln der Pflanzen wird das Wasser in der Erde nach oben transportiert.
Auf der Höhe der Oberkante der "Wasserzellen" kann überschüssiges Wasser aus dem Container ablaufen. Das verhindert, dass die Pflanzen ertrinken
Im dunkelblauen Fass rechts oben im Bild ist das Füllrohr zu sehen. Es reicht bis knapp über den Boden des Containers.
In diesem Modell sieht man gut die einzelnen Teile des Systems und wie sie zusammen funktionieren: Die Erde ist unten im Wasser, also nass, durch die umgedrehten Gefäße bleibt ein Teil des Containers frei von Erde und kann sich mit Wasser füllen.
Solange die Unterkante des Füllschlauchs mit der Anzeigeflasche unter Wasser ist, wird das Wasser in der Flasche stehen bleiben, wenn der Wasserstand so tief sinkt, dass Luft in den Schlauch/die Anzeigeflasche eindringen kann, wird sie sich leeren (im Modell sind Füllschlauch und Anzeigeflasche getrennte Elemente).
Nach dem Füllen des Containers, solange das Rohr noch voll ist, wird die Flasche mit Wasser gefüllt in das Füllrohr gesteckt.
Die Erde unten im Container wird immer nass sein, weiter oben bleibt die Erde feucht, solange Wasser aus dem Reservoir nachgesogen werden kann.
Eine Mulchschicht auf der Erde verhindert, dass allzuviel Wasser verdunstet.
Die Größe des Wassertanks ist so ausgelegt, dass theoretisch die gesamte Niederschlagsmenge eines Jahres gespeichert werden kann. Das reicht zwar natürlich nicht, um ganz ohne Bewässerung auszukommen,aber statt sich jeden Tag damit auseinanderzusetzen, müssen lediglich ein- bis zweimal im Sommer die Reservoirs aufgefüllt werden.
